BIRTH OF A NEW AX84 HIGH OCTANE TUBE AMPLIFIER
(click on any photo for A larger picture)

This amp is known for its thick and dirty sound. Here are two nice thick cuts.

  • Raw signal recorded into a laptop with one of those headsets with a microphone on it. No compression, reverb, pedals, or talent whatsoever. What you hear is what you get!

  • 1992 Strat deluxe plus, neck pickup and volume on 10

  • 10" CTS speaker (inside 1966 Guild Thunder I cab) for Cut 1, and 4 x 10 CTS speakers (65 Super Reverb) for Cut 2.

  • Microphone is about 6 inches in front of speaker(s) and turned way down

  • Start of second verse sounds like I turned on a flange pedal. I did not; the amp just does that if I play a certain way (which I think is righteous).

  • Drive and gain obviously cranked

Cut 1: Thick and Dirty (recorded before making the amp quiet)

Cut 2: Natural Flange

It may come as a surprise to some, but she can be remarkably clean and sweet.

  • Both of these cuts are recorded with the same junky headset mike as above, into a laptop pc.

  • Gain is set to about 1, with just enough Master Volume to get a decent listening level.

  • Guitar volume set at max, which really helps sustain and sounds best to me.

Cut 3: Clean with Lots of Sustain

Cut 4: Another Clean Cut

I built a prototype reverb on April 18. Check out a sound sample below,
and visit the construction page here.
